LifeandLeadership.com Summary
Most social compassion/justice ministries center around the urban context, thus the importance of understanding the historical development of cities, the sociology of urban life, how God views cities, and the components of effective ministries in urban settings.
This is often set forth as the definitive theology of urban ministry. Those expecting a “theology” in the strict sense and careful exegesis may be disappointed. But readers may derive great benefit by reframing their expectations and receiving it as a substantive journal of the faith, experiences, and sage advice of Ray Bakke, a prominent author and practitioner in urban ministry. Bakke served for many years in Chicago, and is now chancellor of a graduate seminary that bears his name, Bakke Graduate University of Ministry in Seattle.
The book has many valuable features. He surveys the biblical narratives (e.g. prophets, Acts) and finds biblical pictures of cities as contexts where God has done his work (e.g. Paul’s missionary journeys). He also highlights God’s love for the city, dispelling the myth that the city is inherently dangerous and evil, and encouraging Christians to remain in the city for the purposes of evangelism and social engagement.
Most Christians interested in urban ministry would benefit from this book, if taken for what it is. Those wanting more classic theologies of urban ministry consult Conn/Ortiz, Urban Ministry, and Greenway/Monsma, Cities.
From the Publisher
As we look at the world – class cities around our planet, we face five new urban realities: a crack cocaine epidemic, assault weapons, massive numbers of homeless children, HIV/AIDS and (in the U.S.) what Time magazine has called “the browning of America.” The needs of the urban population are greater than ever.” How does God see the city? What does Scripture have to say about urban ministry? Here is a biblical theology beginning with Genesis and continuing through to Revelation that will constantly surprise and challenge you.
