LifeandLeadership.com Summary
This is in the same encyclopedic/reference genre as Early and Wheeler’s Evangelism Is, with the difference that Dawson culls wisdom from over 50 contributors, as to where Early and Wheeler reflect their own learning and experience.
Scott Dawson describes the text:
A very thorough collection of essays addressing all aspects and nuances of the evangelism issue, from fine-tuning your testimony to what to do when you don’t have the answers. Over 50 evangelists share their expertise regarding the transmission of the faith, and in so doing they attempt to alleviate the fear that we feel before learning effective witnessing methods. From atheists to non-believing church-members, from the homeless to members of the entertainment industries, from strangers to our own children, almost everyone is covered by this anthology, making it simple for you to break down the invisible barriers between the unsaved and the Savior.
The book is divided into two parts. Part one is seventeen chapters of inspiration and instruction on biblical and practical fundamentals on evangelism. Part two offers fifty-three chapters on how to reach different groups categorized by age, vocation, or religion. This includes insight on how to reach agnostics, atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims. There are also chapters devoted to reaching abuse victims, addicts, convicts, homeless, disabled, affluent, poor, and others. Each chapter is brief (4-6 pages).
Given the plethora of subjects and authors, one is likely to find statements with which they do not agree. But this diversity is also part of the book’s strength. It should be used as a reference volume of suggestions, not prescriptions.
From the Publisher
Nearly ten million Americans have recently said they are “absolutely committed” to both the Christian faith and to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. Still, many people don’t know where to start, what to say, or how to say it. The Complete Evangelism Guidebook is a comprehensive resource on everything a person needs to know about sharing his or her faith. Well-known evangelists such as Rick Warren, Josh McDowell, and Luis Palau combine their knowledge into one comprehensive and easy-to-read handbook.
Sharing your faith doesn’t have to be difficult! The biblical model for personal evangelism was relatively simple for Jesus’s followers. They followed their Lord and shared their faith with whomever they met. So what makes us reluctant to do the same? Do we lack confidence or fear rejection? Perhaps we don’t feel qualified. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says Scott Dawson. “Anyone who has begun a relationship with Christ can be involved in evangelism.” This practical guide will explain how to define, demonstrate, declare, and defend faith with almost anyone from almost any background—friend, co-worker, atheist, agnostic, or someone else. With more than seventy articles written by nearly sixty evangelism experts, The Complete Evangelism Guidebook will make sharing the faith easier than ever!
The goal of this book is to place the practical beside the prolific. This project is the culmination of compiling the contributions of over 60 authors from all walks of life who share one passion – evangelism. You will notice professor, pastors, and lay people all writing about how you can be involved in evangelism. To us, it is not about if you are involved, but how you are involved! This does not serve as another program of evangelism, but rather a tool to be used in evangelism.
