LifeandLeadership.com Summary
Bowen discusses “process evangelism” that is relational and community-based, over against “flasher evangelism” or “spiritual exhibitionism” that is devoid of genuine relationship. He classifies varying levels of “flasher evangelism,” including crusades, tools, strategies, friendship and lifestyle approaches, as having overtones of violence and objectivization. The process he proposes is based on a philosophy of helping others “belong before believing,” of forming genuine relationship, being more indirect to as to safeguard others’ freedom, and using the power of community to foster a deep connection.
While the term missio Dei does not appear, Bowen certainly writes in that spirit. He is conversant with missiologists such as Lesslie Newbigin about how the encounter of the gospel with western culture.
Whether one agrees with Bowen in every respect, this is a good example of an Emergent perspective on evangelism in the postmodern climate.
