LifeandLeadership.com Summary
This is a very thorough guide covering one month before to 18 months into a new minister’s work. It is designed exclusively for Episcopal churches, assuming their church governance by rector/priest, vestry/board, etc. (Michell is a specialist in vestry training). It is probably not the best choice for those in more evangelical contexts, especially those who prefer a relational/shepherd vs. board/administrative role for elders. It is, however, a good supplement with ideas to help a new minister and a church achieve a good stride in a variety of areas. Topics include introducing change, welcoming new members, seeing your church through the eyes of a visitor, building credibility with a few jump start improvement projects, raising a church’s profile in the community, etc.
From the Publisher
The quick-start program described in this book is designed for the new rector or pastor who wants to “hit the ground running.” It is also designed for principal lay leaders who will be instrumental in the transition to new leadership.
The program takes the new pastor, vestry, or other leadership bodies from one month prior to the new leader’s arrival through the first eighteen months afterward. Organized in a user-friendly workbook format, this guide gives step-by-step suggestions on how the sometimes stalled and directionless period of transition in a faith community can be made dynamic and purposeful—a time of true congregational development.
