LifeandLeadership.com Summary
This is a recognized classic, first published in 1967, and still available. Kung is a Catholic scholar who was very instrumental in framing the monumental reformulations of the church among Catholics in the 1960s. This book is an attempt not to represent Catholic doctrine per se, but to delve into the biblical text to discern its message concerning the church. Otherwise, as he says, “All too easily the Church can become a prisoner for the image it has made for itself at one particular period in history.” (19) Much of what Kung said has been expressed well in newer volumes, and it is sometimes difficult to wade through Kung’s comments on the Second Vatican Council. Yet it still occupies an important place in the literature on the nature and purpose of the church, especially parts B and C on the Coming Reign of God and The Fundamental Structure of the Church.
