About the Author
Rachel Waltner Goossen, Assistant Professor of History, is a Kansas native and holds degrees in history from Bethel College, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Kansas. Her areas of interest in teaching and research are twentieth century U.S. history, women’s history, peace studies, and Mennonite history. At Washburn she also works to prepare pre-service history/government teachers at the middle school and high school levels and serves as District 3 Coordinator for National History Day-Kansas.
Goossen’s publications include Women Against the Good War, Conscientious Objection and Gender on the American Home Front, 1941-1947 (1997), Brick and Mortar: A History of Newton, Kansas (1984), Piety and Professionalism: The Bethel Deaconesses of the Great Plains (Mennonite Life, 1994), and Prairie People: A Swiss Volhynian Kaleidoscope of Images, (Mennonite Life, 2000).
Goossen frequently makes historical presentations to Kansas audiences, such as a 2001 symposium address at Fort Hays State University on the topic “Kansans Opposed to War.” She serves as a member of the Publications Committee for the Kansas State Historical Society.
