LifeandLeadership.com Summary

This volume is perhaps one of the most readable and usable discussions available of the importance of spiritual and emotional maturity with regard to the role of leadership. Deeply biblical, it sets forth the idea that personal transformation occurs best when three dynamics are held in tension: the inside out process of obeying Christ, living in the context of a community that extends grace and truth, and developing a reflective lifestyle. The authors integrate the lifestyle and teachings of Jesus with insights on emotional systems, and then illustrates how these principles help one become a calm, less-anxious leader. In the chapter, “Going Home Again,” the book gives in introduction to the family diagram process (which is developed more fully in other volumes listed under Emotional Systems). One of the most refreshing sections is chapter 8, “The Spiritual Disciplines and the Path to Transformation,” which describes the importance of “holy habits” and learning communities. The appendices contain a brief guide to constructing a family diagram, an overview of key spiritual disciplines, and a glossary of systems terms.

From the Publisher

Many books describe elements of church leadership – what it is and how to do it – but very few focus on the process of personal transformation that is central to being able to lead well. The Leader’s Journey provides a blueprint and the practical tools needed to transform the lives of pastors and congregational lay leaders so that they can become truly effective leaders. Blending the best of sound psychological research, solid Biblical principles, and proven congregational experiences – authors Jim Herrington, Robert Creech, and Trisha Taylor offer step-by-step guidance for engaging in the personal transformation journey as part of effective congregational leadership.
