This is a sequel to Boyatzis and McKee’s previous volume, Resonant Leadership, and reads best as a companion text. It is a further application of the principles of Emotional Intelligence (EI) to the tasks and relationships of leadership. Among other things, it is a collection of real life case studies of leaders who have experienced deep change through the principles of resonant leadership. Different circumstances led them to the process of transformation, some losing everything and others experiencing the burnout of the “sacrifice syndrome.” But the common thread is the exceptional growth they achieved by experiencing the five epiphanies that are developed in the earlier volume but expounded upon in more detail here:
- Imagining and articulating the ideal self
- Auditing and assessing the real self
- Developing a growth plan
- Experimenting
- Developing growth relationships
In addition to the real and inspiring case studies, there are over 50 helpful exercises to facilitate each of the five epiphanies. Some of them would be expected, but others are quite creative and generate a lot of excitement in those who are committed to the growth process. Each of the exercises is experience-tested.
Becoming a Resonant Leader is an excellent guidebook for lasting transformation personally and professionally. Some of the concepts and language are assumed (i.e. mentioned but not explained) from the authors’ other works (Primal Leadership and Resonant Leadership), so it is probably not as helpful if read in isolation. Alongside these volumes, however, it helps facilitate a very engaging journey. It is also a great tool for pastors, coaches, consultants, and teachers to use with those they help.
Other good companion volumes for the five epiphanies include Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People for envisioning the ideal self, and Marcus Buckingham’s strengths series for assessing one’s strengths.
